Robert Scott marks 40 years as a qualified solicitor

Congratulations to our Care Proceedings specialist Robert Scott who this week marks forty years as a qualified Solicitor.

Robert was born and raised in Halifax and joined Wilkinson Woodward as an articled clerk in July 1980, after graduating from the University of Liverpool and Chester College of Law.

He qualified as a solicitor and was admitted to the roll on 15 July 1982, becoming a partner at Wilkinson Woodward in 1986. Robert became a director in 2012 when we incorporated following a merger with Huddersfield based Norcliffe & Co Solicitors.

Robert spent the early part of his career representing clients in matrimonial, criminal, clinical negligence and personal injury cases, until the late 1980’s when his first care proceedings case landed on his desk.

The case concerned the care of a local child in which the state had intervened; Robert was asked to represent the mother whose interests he believed were being poorly served. The case was to prove a turning point in his career and led to what was to become his lifelong specialism in care proceedings.

Today, Robert is a familiar face in the Courts at both Leeds and Bradford; he deals almost exclusively with matters relating to public family law – cases in which the local authority involves itself in family life, including care proceedings and sometimes adoption.

As a care proceedings specialist, he has represented hundreds of Calderdale families over the years. He has been a practising member of the Law Society Children Panel since 1988 – only a handful of solicitors in West Yorkshire match his longevity in this regard. Robert is also a member of the Association of Lawyers for Children. He is based at our offices in Fountain Street, Halifax.
