Pathfinder: A new system for family justice in West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire has become the latest region to adopt a new approach to private family law proceedings.

The system, called Pathfinder, is designed to prioritise children’s welfare, streamline case management, better support victims of domestic abuse, and reshape how family courts operate across the region.

What Is Pathfinder?

Pathfinder is a new family court model initially trialled in other parts of the country; it was launched in Dorset and North Wales in 2022, and in Birmingham and Southeast Wales in 2024. It replaces the traditional – and often considered adversarial – system, with a more investigative and child-centred process.

It is being implemented in response to criticism that the traditional family court system is overly hostile, leading to prolonged disputes and re-traumatisation, especially for domestic abuse survivors. The new system addresses these concerns by taking action early in the process – identifying risks, gathering evidence, and making informed decisions – with the aim of prioritising child welfare and minimising prolonged stress and trauma for families.

To implement this new model, CAFCASS (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service), the Judiciary, local authorities, mediation specialists, domestic abuse support providers, solicitors and other stakeholders will be working together to improve outcomes for children and families across the region.

Features that set Pathfinder apart from the traditional family court system include:

  • Introduction of Child Impact Reports (CIRs): Prepared early in the process following an in-depth assessment, CIRs capture children’s wishes, feelings, and welfare needs, ensuring their voices are heard and considered when decisions are made.
  • Early intervention: With case management decisions initiated within days of an application, timely and proactive interventions can be made.
  • Adopting a trauma-informed approach: The system ensures that domestic abuse survivors can share their experiences safely and sensitively and offers access to support services.
  • Shorter timelines: Average case completion times are significantly reduced as investigations are front-loaded, and early resolution is encouraged.
  • A cohesive and co-ordinated response: All agencies involved work together to better meet the needs of children and families.

How families will benefit

The introduction of Pathfinder offers several advantages for families navigating the family court system in West Yorkshire. These include:

  • Efficient processes and faster resolutions: Early, in-depth investigations mean decisions are made sooner, reducing the stress of prolonged litigation.
  • Enhanced child welfare: By placing the safety of children at the centre of proceedings, Pathfinder ensures their needs remain the primary focus.
  • Better support for domestic abuse survivors: The inclusion of domestic abuse risk assessments and specialist support services ensures survivors are supported, protected and empowered throughout the process.
  • Reduced conflict: A less antagonistic approach helps minimise conflict, leading to better outcomes for families. Pathfinder also encourages the use of alternative dispute resolution methods to resolve issues amicably and avoid unnecessary court hearings.
