Happy Birthday to Us!

This month we’re delighted to be celebrating our 130th birthday!

Wilkinson Woodward has been trading from premises in Fountain Street, Halifax since 1886, when the town was still a force to be reckoned with in the world textile industry. Since then, we’ve proud to have grown into one of West Yorkshire’s most established and trusted legal practices. Over our 47,000 days of trading, we’ve seen quite a few changes!

1886 - 1936

The practice was founded in 1886 by local solicitor Robert Wilkinson. He was succeeded in May 1936 by Gordon Woodward who was joined two months later by Harry Ludlam, when the name “Wilkinson Woodward & Ludlam” was adopted. Harry went on to become Mayor of Halifax and was a highly respected and well-known figure in the town.

1936 – 1980s

Throughout the middle of the twentieth century we continued to expand, although the intervening war years saw some legal careers put on hold as several members of staff were drafted up to support the war effort. Harry’s son, David Ludlam remained here until the mid-1980s, when the name reverted to Wilkinson Woodward.

2000 – 2013

In 2000, we opened an office on Market Street in Hudderfield, merging in 2012 with Norcliffe and Co in 2012 and we now operate from premises in Queen Street. In 2001, we merged with Boococks solicitors and estate agents and we’re proud to still incorporate this friendly, independent lettings and estate agency. In 2013, we merged with Bearders solicitors, taking over Bearders’ offices in King Street, Brighouse.

Today

Today, between our offices in Halifax, Brighouse and Huddersfield we house a team of over thirty legal specialists who are ably looked after by our amazing support staff. We hope that while we’ve grown quite a bit over the past 130 years, we’re still true to our ethos of serving the local community.

We’d like to say a HUGE thank you to all our clients and professional contacts who have supported us over the years – you have helped to make us what we are today.
