Some Thoughts on Mr V Mrs: Call The Mediator

Following the final episode of the BBC documentary, mediator Sara Scanlon shares her observations.

One of the main difficulties following separation is that couples continue to drift apart and that elements which might bring closure are pushed into the background in the hope that they will go away or resolve themselves. Often a return to the issues is forced when one party wishes to ‘move on’.

Sometimes, couples simply lack a clear understanding of what their issues are, and make assumptions about what the other party wants - this is often the result of an inability to communicate direct, anxiety or fear of the unknown.

In reality, it is often the case that both parties simply want to get on with their life, return to normality and achieve a fair outcome.

Call the Mediator has offered viewers a useful glimpse into mediation, highlighting how the process enables couples to listen to each other (whilst not necessarily agreeing with each other) and gain an understanding of the feelings and concerns of each other.

Once couples have reached this important milestone, the mediator is able to support the couple in working together to find areas of compromise and reach solutions which will benefit all concerned.

The series demonstrated many of the approaches mediators can take, adapting to the needs and attitudes of the individual couple. This is why mediation is unique. Couples have an opportunity to explore options and interact through a process which can reduce anxiety and ensures both parties have an equal say. It allows the couple to work together on solutions which suits their needs and way of life.

Even in the case of one couple who were unable to find resolution, the programme showed that mediation had been helpful in identifying their issues - something they had been unable to pin point prior to mediation. This can set a foundation for further working together in a different environment.
