Mr V Mrs: Call The Mediator Highlights Benefits of Mediation

The current BBC TV series “Mr V Mrs: Call the Mediator” provides an insight into the role of mediation for couples who have decided to part company.

It’s important to note that mediation is not to be confused with counselling; mediation is not a mechanism to help couples reconcile.

As the programme demonstrates, mediation is future focused, helping couples to work together to resolve matters following the breakdown of their relationship, such as arrangements for the children, sorting out what happens to the house or who will keep the pet dog.

Mediation is designed to help both parties to reach their own solutions - based on their own particular personal circumstances - in a practical and cost effective way.

In last night’s episode of the BBC documentary, the couple showed considerable commitment to the process and concluded that, with an open mind and a bit of give and take, even the most protracted disagreements could be resolved.

The documentary identified the variations on topics we often deal with, including the services of a specialist child consultation mediator (who speaks with children as part of the process).

Mediation is cost effective and easily accessible, with appointments which can often be arranged around working times and child care commitments. The process runs at your pace and to your budget and allows parties to be ‘creative’ with solutions, rather than fastened into an expensive court process.

The final episode of “Mr V Mrs: Call the Mediator” is due to screened on BBC2 at 9.30pm on Tuesday 5 July.
